Is late-term abortion ever necessary?

One important aspect of the late term abortion debate that is overlooked is the purpose. If an ob/gyn wants to separate the mother and the fetus after viability, for the sake of the mother, there is no need to intentionally kill the fetus. Some situations require early delivery to save the life or health of mother or the fetus, but legitimate obstetrical care will try to ensure the best outcome for both.
The difference between a late term abortion, and an early delivery is the intended outcome. An abortion is done to produce a dead fetus. That is the purpose and product of a late term abortion: to guarantee that the fetus will be born dead. The purpose of legitimate obstetrical care is to maximize the chances that both the mother and the fetus will survive the parturition.
There is no medical reason why intentionally killing the fetus would provide any benefit to the mother when parturition is required. In testimony about the Partial Birth Abortion procedure (the most common method of late term abortion), the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology could identify no situation in which this procedure would be the only procedure to save the life or health of a woman.
In fact, there is no medical indication for a late term abortion. The reasons for choosing late term abortion over a delivery are simply to ensure that the baby is dead at delivery.
