The lower house of the French parliament recently voted to approve a ban on wearing burqa-style veils. Justifications for the ban include, in addition to the French value of secularity in public life, the idea that the veil represents the subjugation of women to men. Opponents of the ban have expressed fears that the law will in fact decrease the freedom of women who already experience cultural pressure to wear traditional clothing, in that these women will be made to feel uncomfortable appearing in public. Furthermore, women who may feel comfortable wearing the veil will be restricted in their choice to do so. Is banning the veil an appropriate and effective means of liberating women from subjugation?

Metaphysicians use no hard data when thinking about the nature of reality. Indeed, the metaphysician almost always uses concepts from inside the mind when attempting to create theories about reality, which, many feel, is exterior to the mind in some sense. So the question is this: can metaphysics ever reach a full understanding of reality?

Like many systems of government, democracy offers certain advantages to those under its rule. Many seem to think that it offers the most advantages, and, for that reason, they think it to be the best form of government. But is democracy always the best form of government? Can certain factors make other options better suited for a given situation?

In any given struggle each side often feels entirely justified in its pursuit of victory. Both the motivations for going to war and the methods used to achieve victory will fall under this notion of justification. Is it possible for two sides to be completely justified in a struggle? Alternatively, does one side being justified preclude the possibility of the other being justified as well?

Despite a moratorium on commercial whaling imposed by the International Whaling Commission, of which Japan is a member, Japanese ships continue to kill hundreds of whales every year for the stated purpose of government-sanctioned scientific research, while the resulting whale products are sold commercially. The killing of whales for scientific research is permitted under IWC rules. The Australian government initiated a legal challenge last week against Japanese scientific whaling in the International Court of Justice in the Hague.

Question: Does the international community have an obligation to curb the Japanese practice of large scale whaling?
